NIHR Delegation Hold a Meeting with the Deputy Head of the Permanent Mission of the European Union in Geneva

At the end of the visit of a delegation of the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR) to Geneva to attend the 41st session of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) of the Kingdom of Bahrain, Eng. Ali Ahmed Al-Derazi, Chairman of the NIHR, has met with Ambassador Thomas Wagner, Deputy Head of the Permanent Mission of the European Union, in the presence of Chancellor Yasser Ghanim Shaheen, NIHR Secretary-General.

During the meeting, Al-Derazi gave a brief on the NIHR’s role and competencies stated in its Establishment Law, and its ability to discuss all relevant issues, receive and study complaints, and communicate with the concerned authorities to find the best ways to solve them.

He also gave a brief on the recently held international conference entitled “Alternative Sanctions and Measures, a Qualitative Experience in Criminal Legislation”, which was attended by more than 300 representatives of a number of official and private bodies in the Kingdom, in addition to representatives of a number of Arab and foreign national human rights institutions and a number of accredited ambassadors.  The conference came out with several recommendations that all aim to support the idea of alternative sanctions and measures, integrate the convicts into society and expand the range of beneficiaries from it.

The meeting also addressed technical cooperation and capacity-building programmes offered by the European Union for the advancement of national and civil society institutions.
